One thing that no one has mentioned is balance. Professionals will have short people stand on phone books and tall people sit down. Perhaps the tallest can sit on a chair holding the littlest and the other 2 behind but on each side. Keep the background simple like a wall with no pictures on it. Watch colour---if 2 of them are wearing red for example, you may want to put one on each side.

My one suggestion is to get close and then closer. The surroundings are great but everyone wants the close-ups on the wall or mantle.

I think to get them when they are intent on something they are doing. If you really want props, cotton candy, pillows, stuffed animals, dress up clothing, bubble blower... I could go on and on depending on what you are looking for.

The photos that turn out the best for me are the ones that I don't plan. Kids are so random that just catching them being themselves are always the best photos.

Make sure it's natural, whatever it is. They don't have to be posed as long as you can get up close and see their face, props should be whatever they like.
