Yes, lots of cats don't like to be held!!
Like lots of your answers before me had explained.

Maybe I can give you a tip..if you like.!!
Maybe you should approach gently and each held him for a very short while and assure him that you love him.
No surprises for him from behind.
Cats hate that!!
Also hold a treat or something he likes on one hand and held him and offer to him. Again short while and put him down.
Try a few times and perhaps see if it works.
I think it should.!!

Mine only allow me to hold her but doesn't like my husband holding her and she did the same as yours.!!
So my husband tried this way and now he can hold her a short while with no complain.!!

Good luck...

Just like individual people, cats have individual personalities. One of my two cats love to sit on me, snuggle, and tries to sleep practically on my head every night. However, she hates being picked up and carried. She's always been that way. The other cat, after having him for over a year, I can barely catch. But when I do catch him, he lets me cart him all over the place. Also, when he chooses to jump up with me, he usually stays.

Both cats were adopted from the humane society, so I can't account for their histories. I would guess that they both had specific incidents in the past that now dicates their current behavior. They've both gotten a bit better, but I doubt they'll ever completely change.

Not all cats like to be held. I have two cats. One loves to be held; the other does not. When I pick him up, he meows and squirms until I put him down. I think it's because he doesn't feel secure in my arms. If I don't put him down quickly enough, he digs his hind claws into my stomach. I wonder if his previous owners may have dropped him or thrown him. In any event, he is all loves and purrs when I pet him on the couch or on the floor--as long as it's at his level and his feet are firmly on the ground :o)

I think its just the personality of the cat, honestly. I have had several different cats.. some love to be held and some hate it. I'm sorry if you like to hold him but he won't let you.. I love holding my pets!

Just keep trying.. be very soft, calm and gentle. Don't make quick movements. Maybe eventually he will like it. Pet and baby talk him. :-)

Some cats feel "confined" when held unless THEY choose to sit on your lap. My favorite cat of all time (he was 19 when he had to be put to sleep...while I held him) loved to be literally squashed by me. He'd squeeze between my body and the back of the couch when I laid on it. He would even grunt while purring cause he was "squeezed" so hard I know he must have had trouble breathing!! He was one in a million, though, and I miss him terribly.

I have 4. 3 love to be held and cuddled while 1 hisses and bites when I try to hold her. She even did that at age 3 weeks. I don't know but I feel your pain. I'd love to cuddle her. Hope you find a way with your kitty.

I have 3 cats, one likes to be held and snuggled and the other 2 like to lay by me in my chair and bed, but don't want to be held. I don't know why. My parents have a sweet cat that also likes to sit in laps and sleeps with them, but she does not like to be held either. Why my one likes to be held is unknown, he just loves it. Who knows why some like it and some don't.

not all cats like it when u hold them. Some just want attention and want u to pet them and like to rub against u. One of my cats is always sitting on me and i hold her all the time. The other one sits next to me and i just pet her.
IDK cats r weird sometimes

He considers himself in charge and when you pick him up, the balance of power shifts. Just talk to him and handle him gently and pick him up whenever you want. Then put him down when you're ready to, not when he wants you to. You could also pick him up and give him a treat. Bribery always works.
