Some years ago, we had friends who lived in Paterson. They lived in the most luxurious hi-rise - the lobby looked like the Plaza Hotel - indoor an outdoor pools, gym on premises, sauna, huge terraces. And, this building was in the middle of one of the most disgusting slums I've ever seen. We couldn't believe they lived there.

Paterson is still a dangerous town. Drugs and its associated evils, begging, theft, prostitution, gangs, ect are still the major industry in the once great city. Even 5 to 11 of the alleged September 11th hijackers lived there.

Yeah, Paterson is pretty much a dump. But when you really think about it, most of the big cities in NJ are pretty dumpy (Camden, Newark - though they are trying to rejuvenate it, the part of Jersey City that is not in the Newport section). I only go through NJ if I HAVE to be there....the state police are another story, especially when it comes to those with New York plates.

Fortunately, I was not born there, nor have I suffered the impunity of living there. However, I am familiar with the city and agree with your assessment. There isn't enough dough in Corzine's bank account to get me to live in that rat hole. Lou Costello be damned.
