Jonah spent 3 days in the big fish and Jesus spent 3 days in the Grave. (Hell). That was what Jesus meant when He said that. He rose from the dead after 3 days.

There are actually two answers: Jesus answered this question because His ressurection from the dead would be the ultimate sign. Any part of a year, or day represented the whole time period. Thus, Jesus was resurrected on the third day 1) Matthew12:40 "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."

2) Jonas preached to a lost generation--destructin in forty days. Although Nineva's repented, it was short-lived and they were destroyed by the Assyrians forty years later. Likewise, Jesus preached to a lost generation, and they were destroyed forty years after His crucifixion in AD 70 As recorded in Luke 11:30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

Let this be a lesson to those who belittle God's goodness and mercy. He will not tolerate blasphemy forever; and His delay of judgments only emboldens the wicked to commit sin. See Nahum 1:3: The LORD [is] slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked.

You know the story of Jonah right? Well- Jonah was summoned by God to go to Ninevah, and tell them to repent. Jesus in the same manner was sent to preach God's gospel. When Jonah was on the ship, a storm came, and tossed the boat around, ok. And, Jonah told the crew to save themselves by throwing him (the sacrifice) into the sea when the great fish came, and swallowed Jonah up then spat him out on the shore three days later. The three day thing was in reference to the ressurection.
This is what the spirit impressed upon me while reading the scriptures. I know alot of people mentioned the three day part but I feel that the whole story is how I just explained it. I hope that it is useful to you. Also, if you have bible questions, you should pray to the Holy Spirit to open your heart, and reveal the truths. As the Holy Spirit is the revealer of truth. Before I read the bible I pray that my heart is right, and for the Spirit to reveal truths to me. I also ask God for a contrite heart, and to help me apply His truth. Then after I'm done reading, I meditate on what I read. Like I said though, I hope this tidbit is useful to you, and I pray that you find the answers you need by studying God's word..God bless!

Well Jonah was expelled by a giant fish to a place near Nineva.

Maybe it is being thrown up by a fish near a land locked city.
