Mike, you sir are a liar!
websurfr132, your research has given you the correct answer.
ALOPILOT, I could not agree more about the amazement I get by some answerers here. I do not profess to always be correct, however, I do know where to go to find the answer.
To the OP, you can fin d your answer in black and white per the FAA in 14 CFR 61.103 , it says:
§ 61.103 Eligibility requirements: General.
To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must:
(a) Be at least 17 years of age for a rating in other than a glider or balloon.
(b) Be at least 16 years of age for a rating in a glider or balloon.

First-off, Aron, the FAA does not issue pilot "licenses", it issues pilot "certificates". Small point, but it's important to know the vernacular if you want to be taken seriously, in any endeavor!
Secondly, though several answers here have correctly quoted the FAA regulations regarding minimum ages, none have explained the differences in the privileges granted.
So here's the complete answer to your question.
A person can be issued a "Student Pilot Certificate" at any age, but has to be 16 years old to fly a powered aircraft alone. A Student Pilot is not permitted to operate an aircraft with a passenger.
A person has to be 17 years old to be issued a powered aircraft Private Pilot Certificate, and can then fly with passengers.
So you must be 16 to fly solo, and 17 to take your buddies with you!
Go for it!!

As per Part 61 subpart E of the FARs, the minimum age to be eligible for a private pilot certificate is at least 17 years old for a rating in an aircraft other than a glider or balloon, but only 16 years old for a balloon or glider. The minimum age for a student pilot certificate is 16 years in anything other than a balloon or glider, and 14 years old for a balloon or glider.

16 to hold a student pilot license and 17 for a private license. this is the same for both FAA (USA) and CASA(Australia) and of course 14 for balloons and glider. you can't rent a car, but hey you can fly and aircraft in the states!

Am I eligible for a student pilot’s certificate?
You are eligible if:
You are at least 16 years old. If you plan to pilot a glider or balloon, you must be at least 14 years old.
You can read, speak, and understand English
AND
You hold at least a current third-class medical certificate. If you plan to pilot a glider or balloon, you only have to certify that you have no medical defect that would make you unable to pilot a glider or balloon.

No youngest last I heard. You have to be able to fly, you have to pass the test . Wasn't there a 10 year old that set a distance record recently?
