Having a dog is a lot of work and a lot of responsibility. It also costs a fair bit of money. I'm not sure how old you are, but walking the dog three times a day, even when it rains, can be a real pain. Are you sure you will do that? Dogs need to go to the vet, first for their vaccinations so they will not get sick, then for their spay/neuter surgery. Dogs need a lot of training, otherwise they can be a real problem to have around. Dogs should live with their people, not out in a yard. So it really is a BIG decision, and not something to rush into. Talk to your dad and ask him what his concerns are. Money? or time? or not knowing if you will take good care of it? Maybe you can come to an agreement, or maybe you will have to wait for a while, until you are older. Good luck with your decisions.

First, make sure where ever you live you are allowed to have a dog. Find out the dog's schedule and behavior from your friend. Why are they giving the dog away? If they are moving, then that's OK. But what if the dog doesn't behave right? too much barking, peeing in the house, biting? That's not a good first dog.
Also find out how much it costs to keep a dog. Ask you friend how much yearly vet bill, food, and any grooming needed costs. (on average this is about $400 a year, not counting any emergency vet visits)
Now, figure out a way you can earn money to pay for this dog. a job? raking leaves? yard work? extra chores?
Finally, are you willing to clean up all the poop this dog will leave behind? not only in the yard, but also in the house?

After you have answered all these questions, write down the answers, essay style, and sit down with both your parents. Ask them when they are not busy, and not crabby. Set up a meeting time if you have to. Calmly explain why you want the dog, how you will pay for the dog, and all the dog's good points AND bad. Also agree that if you are NOT taking care of the dog, it will go to a shelter/new home.

Ultimately, it is your parents decision and they get the final say. A dog does help children learn about life and responsibilities but a dog can only teach you that if you are the one taking care of those responsibilities. If you can't afford it, don't get it. Why don't you get a job and help pay for the food and stuff like that? If you are scared of dogs, why do you want one? If the dog is an older dog, there is usually a reason why they are giving the dog away for free. Especially a pedigree dog. If you haven't been around the dog, how do you know how he acts? He might not get along with children, he might have a genetic health problem, he might need medication, he might not like cats, he might need special food.

Wait until you are older. Go and volunteer at your local animal shelter and interact with dogs there. You shouldn't get a dog if you are afraid of dogs.

My dad hates dogs. I never wanted a dog. Just like my dad I never really liked dogs... I was scared of them. That is until I found myself having no choice but to take care of a dog (boxer) every weekend because no one else was home (in the small apartment) to do so, and the dog kept eating my new clothes. The owner had to give the dog away because it was no life for a boxer to live in a small apartment (my boyfriend's apartment). I was soooooooo happy ! but then it was the weekend and without the dog around I was secretly sad. When I got back home, it was the first time in 23 years that I asked my parents for a dog. My dad told me what he always told my sister (who asked for a pet dog the minute she was born!) ''Sure you can have a dog! When you move out and get your own place, you can have as many dogs as you like. But here, there will never be a dog.'' Now my boyfriend and I have our own place and, I still can't believe it to this day, we have a dog that I (out of all people) absolutely love. Wow! I can't believe I wrote that!

All that to say... If your dad does not want a dog, you should respect that because you are still living under his roof. Plus, it's no fun for someone who does not like dogs or for someone who is afraid of dogs to have to take care of one, even though it might turn them into dog lovers in the end.

Hi there: Taking care of a dog is a very big responsibility. If your parents say no for now; maybe if you sat down with them and asked what you could do in the next couple of months it would open the door for communication. When my son and daughter were young, we got them each a baby bunny for Easter. It was just too cold to leave them outside, so we put them in a big TV carton box. My son, the eldest, had promised to change the news papers, clean, etc. Of course we got home at midnight, my son had not done his job. I woke him up (that took a while) and he had to clean the bunny box. We still laugh about that today!! I find it sad to have a dog and be gone all day..........It would take away from your play time, you would have to get up earlier, etc., etc. Just be grown up and really talk to your parents, explaining what responsibilities you are ready to take, so they will see that are getting more responsible.......there are hundreds of puppies waiting to be adopted......but you only have one family and you must show your responsibility FIRST. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your dad's the one who has to pay for food and vet's bills, so respect his decision and get a dog when you're old enough to pay for it yourself. In any case it's always the adults who end up taking care of the "child's pet". If you're really scared, go and visit a friend who has dogs and get used to them that way. Or get a weekend job at the local shelter.
