to give my homemade gumbo flavor and heat, i use these ingredients (use at least 2 of them & your gumbo will be good...use them all & it will be perfect!) : 1/2 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper , 1 teaspoon ground cumin , 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves , some diced serrano peppers and green peppers.

There's the pepper sauce call Texas Pete (I believe). It is a clear liquid (vinegar based) with some small green peppers it in. Not only does it provide heat, it adds a nice flavor.
And don't forget to put a little file (sassafrass) in.

Cayenne pepper, black pepper, and essence of emeril give a great taste to my gumbos the trick is to lightly toast ina warm pan before adding to your current recipe
and this doesn't give you the acid/vinegar content of jarred hot sauces....

A few drops of Louisiana hot sauce or any other hot sauce you may have.
If you dont have that, you can use a few sprinkles of cayenne pepper.
Good luck, sounds good!
