Hello, according to the Herbs & Spices book that I have in my hand, most basil leaves bruise and wilt easily. So avoid getting those that are already drooping or have blackened leaves. As for storing this plant, put in a damp paper towel or a plastic bag and store in the vegetable crisper. However, they can only last there for 2-3 days before losing freshness.

Or, you could pick out another kind of basil, the Thai Basil, which is sturdier than most of its cousins. These can keep for 5-6 days.

One way of storing basil leaves for long-term storage is to puree them with a little water or olive oil and freeze in ice cube trays. They can stay there for up to three months.

To keep any fresh herbs you store them in salt in an air tight container, layer salt on bottom, put basil on top of layer then layer that with salt.

I agree with wrapping it in a paper towel and putting it in a freezer bag and putting it in the fridge. But also, I have done it the same way in the past, but put it in the freezer.

That stuff grows like a weed,.. really.
I just "grow my own", and I've got plenty of it,..
All it seems to really need is full sun & water every now & then.
