If you go to your tools and click defragmenter and analyze it will usually tell you if you should do it or if it is not necessary, that will be under all programs and accessories and system tools.

It's not necessary, but it can improve the speed of your computer in some circumstances. The disk is most likely to become fragmented to the point that it impacts performance if the disk is nearly full, and if it's heavily used. If you defrag once every month or two your drive will be in good shape.
Have a good day!

it does not take that long and you should do it about every month and the way you it is you go to my computer and to control panel and to schedule task and you followed the steps so you schedule it at night and when you do it make sure you do it for both drives for c and d drives. here is some more advice if you go to my computer and go to the c drive and right click and go down to properties and click it. it should bring up a window that shows you how much asapace you have and how much you have use. you will see a button that says disk clean up and clickthat and let that go though the steps and it will bring up another window and it will tell you details about every folder and if you check those you will gett more space out of your computer you'll be amazed. when you get done selecting and you press ok it will ask you a question and select yes. by the way you can do that on schedule tasks.you should do that to each drive. here one more if you go to c drive again and you will see some across the top one will say tools it will be the second one, if you click that it will bring up another window and will say check now and will bring up another window and check check both of those and cilck ok and ait will ask a question and select yes and go down and restart your computer and it will do what it has to do. now if you have a usb drive (portable hard drive) you might want to do that for what i just said to you. if you don't have one, don't worry about it.

For a user that uses the computer a couple of times a week, they will probably only have to defrag about 2 times a year. The average user should defrag 1 time per month. I have a program called Diskeeper 8 Professional. I have it setup on a schedule to do this for me 1 time per month.

Good idea once a month or so. Defrag puts your programs and files together instead of spread out over the HD. Makes them faster to open. If you install a lot of programs and store lots of data you'd do it often, If you don't do it much maybe defrag every 6 months.
