Having been raised in a 3rd world dictatorship, I feel very comfortable defining it: 3rd world countries are characterized as poor, having economies that are fairly distorted by their dependence on the export of primary products to the developed countries and in return they receive finished products from these countries. These nations also tend to have high rates of illiteracy, disease, and population growth and unstable governments.

The term Third World was originally intended to distinguish the nonaligned nations that gained independence from colonial rule beginning after World War II from the Western nations and from those that formed the former Eastern bloc, and sometimes more specifically from the United States and from the former Soviet Union (the first and second worlds, respectively).

3rd world countries are usually sharply differentiated- they include countries on various levels of economic development. And despite the poverty of the countryside and the urban shantytowns, the ruling elites of most third world countries are wealthy. Classic 3rd world countries are in Africa, Oceania, Asia and Latin/South America.

Almost forgot, there was at one time and attempt to re-classify this category and add a 4th world nation status, which would have included Haiti, MX, Bangledesh, India, Sudan, Ethiopia, etc-- countries whose level of poverty hunger, illiteracy was stunningly below the rest of the world.

Basically a 3rd world country is one that unfortunately is not as developed as the big countries like the US, UK, France, etc. The 3rd world countries might include Niger, Mali, Nepal, and many, many others. They are placed into this category because they are not "in with the times". They do not have modern weapons, good food and water supplies, established working governments, and many other important things for a country to succeed.

A third world country is, in ecessence, a country on the bottom of the food chain. Most parts of Africa - the slums and run down parts - make it a third world country. America is a first world country. The richest, in fact. A country's status depends on governmetal firmness, the amount of food and clean water available to the public, and how busy it's trade routes are. If you want to know more, google it.

In general, Third World countries are not as industrialized or technologically advanced as other countries, and therefore in academia, the current term in use is "developing nation".

have a nice day.
