The song is either the "Call to the Post"; which is played not only at the Derby, but at every other major stakes race in the country, or it is "My Old Kentucky Home", which is played every year on Derby Day as the horses come onto the track for the post parade prior to the race. Other tracks have other songs- Pimlico, where the Preakness is held, has "Maryland, my Maryland", and Belmont Park in New York has " The Sidewalks of New York", which is from the musical "West Side Story". The other 2 songs are official state songs of the states where the races are run. The "Call to the Post" is instrumental- the other songs are not. Many times, in addition to the traditional state songs, our National Anthem is also played before the races are run- this happens every year.

There are two songs you may hear at the KY derby. The first is the call to the post which is played by the bugeler and is only instrumental. You'll hear this played at almost every US track. Also at the derby they'll play 'My Old Kentucky Home' which is not an instrumental but with everyone mouthing the words and getting it wrong it might as well be.
