I think that it is a matter of what you want in a vehicle. I am always a little leary of buying a new vehicle on a new body style. Especially when they have changed major items such as the trasmission. I really like the altima but I always wait a year for them to get some of the bugs worked out. There are other great cars Scions ( don't know much about them), Toyota Camry and Corolla, and Accord Honda and Civics are going to run you in the same area. Though it has been my personal experience that the Toyota and Honda in my life have been cheaper to maintain because they spent less time in the shop overall. Gas milage is also better on the other two, though the 07 Altima is more comparable I think that it still gets like miles per gallon. It really comes down to what you are looking for each and every vehicle has it's own drawbacks take each model for a test drive and see what you think. BTW unless your parents are paying for your insurance you may want to check and compare those rates too.
Good luck!

The altima is a great car, with many features. Under $20 k buys a basic Altima. Check out the Sentra. Loaded for under $20K, and has a $500. rebate for Nissan financing and a $500. college rebate also. gets 30-3 mpg too.

Best value is the Scion TC, can't beat it. Comes standard with sunroof, rims, A/C, power. The manual starts at 17K while the auto will start about 17,800, for the price, and considering the features, the value is the best. Not a bad looking car either.

If you can afford it, get it. Other wise buy a reliable used car and poket the difference.
