There are a few shopping centres around the central skytrain station in Bangkok. MBK (very popular with Thai teenagers), Siam Square and World Trade Centre (I think that is what they are called - it has been a few years since I have been there). This area has a variety of markets, discount chain stores, designer rip-off, plus legitimate retail shops stocking western brands (esprit, lacoste etc)

Hi, best shopping in Thailand is really in Bangkok. There you can have access to many varieties of things to buy. To specify which place is best is not easy. You do find slightly different brands at different shopping centres.
The typical places to go to will be in Pathumwan area where Mah Boonkhrong is. This place is quite ideal as there are a number of shops near each other.
For a start, in MBK Centre, here you can find many items at quite low prices. You do get branded sports shops and attire shops around, plus food court and restaurants. Electronics cheap on the upper levels 4 and 5, furniture above that, and the rest on the lower floors. Prices are affordable so many young Thais frequent the place.
Just across is Siam Square. This is popular for girls as there are many small shops selling own hand crafted clothes and accessories. Shoes, dresses, etc, you can get them and you are not likely to find a second piece around. Clusters of hundreds shops, so youcan have quite a bit to browse.
Just across this place, diagonal to MGK is Siam Discovery Centre. Here you get more up=market brands here. Including fine restaurants. Prices are not cheap, so only the wealthy visit.
Across this place, opposite MBK is Siam Paragon, the newbie in that area. A big up-market mall, it carries quite a bit of branded shops here. One main attraction is the Sian Underwater World, the largest marine aquarium in the region. Occupies basement and first level. Worth a visit for half a day to observe the marine life of the region.
Just a few blocks away from this place is Ploenchit. Here the former World Trade Center had been renamed Central World Plaza and you can find shops around, branded ones especially. Across it is Gaysorn Plaza 1 & 2. Next to it is Zen Building. Next door is Isetan with the popular Erawan Shrine. You can watch traditional Thai dance around noon everyday. Also nearby is Ploenchit Central Department Store. Slightly cheaper than the branded shops here, and it has 6-7 levels to shop and even eat too.
So much for the street. There are more shopping spots in other district of Bangkok. Quite a bit to list down.
I guess since you will be in Bangkok over the weekend, head to Chatuchak or Jatujak or JJ Weekend Market. Thousands of stalls to keep you busy whole day shopping if you like. If you do not have enough, next door is Jatujak Plaza with more shops. Across the road is a produce market with more stalls. Not enough, at night head to Suan Luum Night Bazaar with hundreds of shops to fill your nighttime. This place may be closed in April for re-development, so have to try your luck if the place is still available for your shopping when you arrive in Bangkok.
I think your stay is just not long enough to cover Pratunam clothing wholesale centre, Bo Bae clothing market, and other night markets around Bangkok!

Bangkok is a paradise for shoppers. You have the large department stores like Paragon, Siam Center, Siam Discovery Center, MBK and Central World all located in the same area. Then you have your open air markets Like JJ's weekend market, Sumpang Morning Market, Bo Be textile and garment center, and Suan Lum Night Bazaar. You also have the floating market. The list goes on and on. Have a good time.

The JJ's weekend market that nowhereman referred to is a place you definitely want to go to if you are going to be in to shopping. JJ is what the Thais call it. In your book and on the map, it is called Chatuchak Weekend Market. It is at the Mo Chit (last) Sky Train stop. This time of year, it is best enjoyed early in the morning, or after 4:30 pm, or so.
