I have to say that it bothers me as well, perhaps because I am old enough to remember the final days of segregation, and the hypocrisy I witnessed within my church. This line reminds me too much of things I heard church members say back then.
Christ was all about inclusion. He went out of his way to spend time with people who were considered outcasts in his day. He preached against Levitical law, which many Christians still use today to justify discrimination against gay people.
Seems that many Christians want to call themselves Christian, while tossing out everything Christ taught about compassion and reverting back to the time when some people were considered pure and others were considered untouchable.

Because, practically, that is the nicest thing we can say.
There are not so nice things also, that we don't say, get the whole idea? Jesus taught us that.
Jesus himself wasn't a homophobe, or a racist or a male chauvinist. He spoke with the Sarmatian woman at the well. Where he was compassionate and kind to a woman (shudder) of a different race!!!
Even adulteresses (horrors) John 8.
He told us what was right however. (Mark 10:6-9)

And just why should homosexuals be suppoprted if they continue to PRACTICE what they do.
We have the example from the Bible.
The people of Sodom and Gomorrah CONTINUED in their behaviour and were destroyed.
IF they had ceased and departed the cities, they would have been SAVED.
To claim to love someone while they continue to PRACTICE their wrongful behaviour is to CONDONE that behaviour.
(1 CORINTHIANS 6:9) “What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men,”

If a person is a true Christian, then the expression is accurate. God is not willing that any should perish, he loves all of his creation and he wants them to repent of their sinful ways. Although he loves them he hates their sin and he expects those who call themselves by his name (CHRISTian) to do the same. Because a Christian believes homosexuality is wrong why would they do any thing to support the lifestyle? That would be a contradiction of beliefs.

Because it diverts attention from the real issue: the lack of rational justification for considering homosexuality "sinful" in the first place.

You are in good company - Jesus apparently faced the same kind of "holier than thou" hypocrisy with the so-called religious leaders of his day.
Then again, he was nailed to a tree for his trouble.
Ah well.

they practice the opposite--they love the sin because without it they would have no excuse to hate the sinner. If they actually practiced it as you have it written up there, there would be no more problems, because if you don't like homosexuality, you don't practice it--in other words, if you don't like buttsex, don't have it

I expect they think of it as a justification for being hateful. Actually, no, I take that back. Unjustified assumption. Sorry.
Some of them probably quite genuinely think they're doing the right thing.
