There is no free version of Microsoft Word, but there is a free Word alternative called OpenOffice.org. Openoffice is a very functional program that can work with Word documents. You can edit and create Word files. It's useful for word processing and you can save in the Word format. A word of caution, OpenOffice has all the functions as a Word document, though if you save it as a Word .doc it may not always be fully supported in Microsoft Word. You won't have this issue with just text, but if you have complex diagrams with arrows and pictures, things may be distorted when you open them in Microsoft Word at school or elsewhere.
I highly recommend this program, as it is the only program I use. It even comes with Microsoft Office equivalents of Excel, Powerpoint, and other products. The link to the website can be found in my sources.

Free MS word/office? Dont count on it. However, I will recommend OpenOffice.org.
"OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute. To help build the community, join us."
Its what I use, and you can save your work as various filetypes, including .doc and .rtf
The suite has a word program, and equivalents to excel, powerpoint, database, a drawing tool, and a mathmatical program. Except for the fact that I like MS powerpoint better (and this is just a personal opinion), its a great set.

Microsoft doesn't offer a free version of Word, except if they make a donation to a charity.
Try Open Office or Abi Word for a free word processor.

No and with MS new authentification software illegal copies can be a problem.
As recommended Open Office is a good choice even google has a doc and spreadsheet application.
If you are a student you can get Word at considerable savings.
