My grandmother has made these to hang off the canopy on her RV. They are quite unique and very easy to create. You can find the pots you will need at WalMart. They are white, and they have designs on them already.
She would just follow along with the designs on the pots to drill the holes and push the beads in from the back side of the pot. I think hers had flowers and diamonds on the pot. She would drill a hole in the center of each flower, one at each end of the petals, a hole on each point of the diamond shape...etc. There wasn't a specific design she used~she just worked with the design on the pot itself. It helps to drill the hole for the light fixture first so you can test the amount of light coming through your holes. Then, if you have spaces that are too dark, you can unplug the light and drill more holes in it.

I found a link to a site that has instructions for making them. Once you have chosen a pot your options are limitless! (In the link below, this person that wrote the article used one of the pots that my Grandmother would buy.)
I would stop by a craft store to buy the beads if you can't find what you're looking for at WalMart.

Good Luck and have fun with this project! They look fantastic all lit up at night!

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about but generally you just need a hole in the bottom of the pot for the light kit to go thru.

Ah wait...are you talking about drilling holes in the sides of the pot for the light to come thru? I think you could do that randomly or in a pattern - it would be up to you.

This might help....

And if it doesn't... have you considered just using a really funky spaghetti strainer??? The holes are already there, all you have to do is pass the wiring. And nowadays, in pretty much any kitchen store, you can find some really nice metal strainers in all sorts of colors....

And let there be light!!! :)
