I obviously know its not a period, hence the " " around the word. I didn't know it was called a heat cycle and if i did i probably would have known the answer to my own question.

Technically, dogs don't have periods, It's called going into heat or going into season.

The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks.

The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen.

Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter.

Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred.

While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. It I will also lower her risk to several types of cancer.

EDIT TO ADD:

Sarah, there's no need to apologize or explain why you used the word "period" instead of :heat" and I hope you didn't see my response as being rude because it wasn't meant to be that way. I apologize if it seemed that way to you. You, everyone else, me included, can't be expected to know everything there is to know about a subject. You can' learn without asking questions and no question is stupid or dumb :-).

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/FGKuS

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

a females heat cycle will last about 3 weeks and then will return in 6 months. they have their heat cycle 2 times a year. there is nothing to worry about when they bleed, it is just part of nature. my female golden retriever comes in heat every 6 months to the date and it usually lasts between 3-4 weeks. when your female is in heat do not let her out alone because all males will be able to smell her no matter where they live in the neighborhood, and you don't want unwanted breeding. so when she comes in keep a close eye on her and take her every where you go and only leave her out to do her business then bring her back in. good luck

The heat usually lasts 3 weeks, give or take a couple of days on either side. Please do not let her get pregnant! The greatest danger for getting bred is between 10 and 18 days. It is safe to get her spayed about 2 months after her heat period. She likely will come back into season in about 6 months, so do it before then!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tinyurl.im/fO8fR

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Technically, Sarah, it is a period. The word "period" simply means a certain time frame. lol! We use it because it is the time frame the female is going through ministration "period". Going into "heat" is also a period. It is a "time frame". LOL I choose to call this comment a PERIOD in which I explain what a period is. And now (LOL) I end it with a period.
