Golden Rule is owned by United Health. It is one of the leading issuers of policies to individuals. Also consider Blue Cross, Time Insurance, Mutual of Omaha, if you want other options.

I am an independent insurance agent in Oklahoma. Golden Rule (owned by United Health) is a good company, but they are more expensive than some other carriers. If you know your coverage will start in a year, you can get a temp med policy that will cover you until then for a lot less than a permanent policy. I wish I knew where you are located - I could refer you to a good independent agent in your area to help you as I was a sales manger for a health company and worked with about 300 agents in Oklahoma alone. Contact several independent agents in your area and get several quotes, that is my advice.
PS DO NOT do the Ameriplan thing - it is only discounts to medical costs and is not insurance. That person is not looking to help their clients, they just want to SELL something and make a buck.

It will be a bit more challenging for your because of your age, certainly more expensive than for a younger person. I have not heard of Golden Rule, but UnitedHealthCare is a very reputable and large medical insurance company. Make sure you are dealing with UnitedHealthCare and not someone with a similar name. I know Blue Cross/Blue Shield also offers individual medical coverage like you are looking for. Good luck.

Many online companies have very cheap temporary health insurance. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.
Go to: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=616163&Type=health
Take care,
Casey
