As long as he is two years old and a clear bill of health from your vet she should be in her prime on the 12 day of her heat cycle. Sometimes it can be 10 days, so let just say between the 10 and 12th day of her heat.

Unless you are a breeder who has invested both time and money in acquiring healthy, and health checked breeding stock, she should not be bred. And if you were such a person, you would already have made some effort to learn what is necessary before attempting to breed dogs at all.
Many breeders are now doing early altering so that their puppies don't become part of the over population of random bred, puppy mill "products". Those that don't early "speuter", are willing to enforce their contracts that forbid breeding.
What many people who want "just one litter for the kids" dont' realize, is that with the miracle of life comes the miracle of death. If not immediately, then down the line when those puppies reproduce and are turned into shelters for being too big, too rowdy, etc.
Spay your dog and let her be a healthy pet.

What worries me is you have to ask. If you have researched this which you should if you are going to bring puppies into this world, you would not need to ask. You would know all about it. You would have a mentor in the dog world to help you. Ideally, you would be in the dog world for years and understand genetics and what is a good nick so that you can bring healthy sound puppies into this world that will be a credit to their breed.
5 million dogs die in this country each year. There are puppies put to sleep every day. Yes, puppies. Some only days old. Please think very hard before bringing puppies into this world. Are you going to give them the proper care they need? Are you going to feed mom and the pups really good food? Not Dog Chow or Puppy Chow or other junk food like that. Are you going to find real forever homes for the pups? Are you going to get contracts and research the homes? Get references and a home check? I know of dogs that die every day because they don't have homes. Just the other day there was a mom and puppies in the shelter and they were all gassed.
Please, spay and neuter. Go to your shelter and watch dogs being put to sleep or gassed, think about it.

We had a dog growing up and she was never bred and she was not spade. My grandparents always kept her away from other dogs when she was in heat. The reason I am telling you this is she lived until she was 17. I don't really know if that had anything to do with it, but she was always healthy and a real good dog.

Usually 10 - 12 days from the first sign of bleeding. But sometimes she won't allow the male to get close to her.
I wonder why it seems people leave snide remarks to questions they had no obvious interest in answering. HMMMM!
Hey try joining the dog mentors online, they are there for people who want to learn, and best of all, they actually answer questions as best as possible. Dogmentor@yahoogroups.com . I hope this helps you!

She should not be bred, unless you have a really good reason for breeding her. Pregnancy is a risky thing, both for the dog (health issues) and for the owner (think biiiiig vet bills). There are already enough dogs in the world that do not have homes. Please do not add any more.

As long as she is two, it's between 9 and 12 days normally from the first day you notice blood.
