I personally like a cool compress on my eyes for about a half hour.
There are eyedrops for strained eyes, too. You could ask a pharmacist at your local drug store for some suggestions as to which ones would be best.
You also might want consider having your husband's eyes checked. If he's having an abnormal amount of burning, it could be due to strain from deteriorating eyesight. My husband was having serious problems with burning eyes and sat in front of a computer all day, too. He finally went to get his eyes checked and it turned out his eyes had gotten worse and his glasses weren't helping him anymore. With his new prescription, he hasn't been experiencing the burning eyes everyday.

There are computer glasses that are supposed to help reduce the fatigue that looking at a computer all day causes. Eye drops for dry eyes could help. As would closing them for 20 minutes upon arriving home. He should look away from his computer every 15-20 minutes or so for a break on his eyes. He should (well everyone should) baby his eyes by wearing sunglasses during every season while outside and driving. Eat lots of dark greens for good eye health. Eggs are also good for the eyes (luetin).

Your husband is probably not blinking enough, which happens when we work in front of the computer. If he can consciously make an effort to blink it will help out. Also, he needs to use a lubricating drop every 4 hours. There is a new drop called Systane that is pretty good (a little more expensive though) and safe for contacts. Even just a generic drop will help if he remembers to use it.

If your eye care professional agrees that is the problem...I find a cup of coffee helps. Less effective if you drink it through the day of course. Caffeine helps to tempera-rely shrink the veins this relieves the pressure and subsequent burning. I have the same problem. This helps me. Ask your eye care provider first if you don't normally drink caffeinated beverages. Again if you don't usually drink coffee or cola I would check with a health care provider before starting. Caffeine is a stimulant and can have side effects as well as effect some meds.

studies have been conducted to prove that a constant fixation on a screen such as computer or tv can have an effect on your eyes that dialates them in different ways. Tell your husband that while hes at work he should look away from the screen every 15 minutes or less and fixate his vision on another object in the room. This in turn refocuses your eyes so that they isn't a continual stress on them. If this doesn't work, a nice 20 minute nap when he gets home should help.
hope this helped!

The screen can be dimmed by pushing buttons at the bottom of the screen. Try that, now you can put raw potatoes on the eyes to cool them, that is what some people do when they burn their eyes, welding.

Tell him to go buy a Monitor Glare Filter. It's a tinted glass that has these hanging arms and goes on the monitor and reduced the glare up to 90%.

If he wears glasses he may need to get a different prescription for computer users. If not they make a product called liquid tears that is great. I use it all the time.

Cool washclothes
used (cool) teabags
Cucumber slices
Any of the above, placed over closed eyes, is soothing.
He might try some artificial tears, too, for lubrication.
