Personally, I wouldn't recommend you work here without a visa. You can get into a lot of trouble. You will be sent straight home, and not be allowed to come back for a number of years.

When you get your visa, there are many jobs available here. There are thousands of fruit pickers jobs. I live in North Queensland, and they are crying out for banana pickers here. In the cities there are many agencies you can join and give details of your skills etc, and they can match you up to a job. On a working visa you are not usually allowed to work for one company for more than 3 months. Most backpackers here do a little temp work here and there and travel the country, working in different cities etc and getting to see the country.

Good luck. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. The backpacking lifestyle is wild and fun. Just get your visa.

Honestly?, backpackers without working visas aren't encouraged because can you be deported pretty smartly!! Of particular attention lately are those without visas working in the building trades. The reality is of course, that there are many people without visas working in bars, waitressing in cafes and restaurants, in housekeeping positions etc all over, particularly in major capital cities. The trick I guess, is to keep your head down, don't boast or say too much about where you are from while you are working and remember that anyone you talk to could work for immigration! My suggestion is to either wait and get the visa so you can relax and enjoy the whole experience without the fear of getting caught or take the risk of being deported and refused future entry for up to five or ten years! Contact backpackers hostels that have a good reputation with other overseas visitors and they might be able to give you a better guide. Good luck and don't forget to visit the mid north coast of NSW for a laid back lifestyle and great beaches!!

Getting a visa is a good idea, it is called being honest, other wise there are plenty of backpackers working for cash in hand, but is it worth getting caught and having a stamp on your pass port for ever plus being shipped out of the country a most undignified way ? that is your choice.
When you do come to my beautiful Australia, take care and do some reading about the country, because it is beautiful and big but their are dangers, have a good trip.

If you ARE actually planning on getting a working visa...

Then if you are willing to do any job - you should find one.

Fruit picking is one of them ones that you can just do.. for any period of time you want ( within limits )

Office work is quite easy to get as is call center work .... probably not short term though..

Bars and pubs and things are usually all booked up..

I've never been so this is just what i have read and been told to be honest..

www.gapyear.com has some useful info.. especially on the messageboard bit

Bar work is available but you will need a Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate. This is a one day course in TAFE colleges which you can do when you get here. You must have a visa to work here, it is not worth the trouble if you don't.
