Oh Come on, it is the vogue thing to say. Some Holly-weird person said it back in the Valley Girls days and now most everyone says it automatically. Silly, right?

The expression, a too-common one by the way, is just that - a common expression. It has nothing to do with religion or any gods.
It seems to be more prevalent in the US, where the vocabulary is somewhat limited compared to other English-speaking countries.
It is a habit - a bad habit but a habit nonetheless.
I am an atheist but I am also in the habit of saying, as an example, "Jeezuz!" when something shocks or amazes me. A habit. I would even say "FerChrissake!!" when I see or hear something really stupid. A habit. A figure of speech. An expression that is meaningless.
Do not read anything into these expressions that is not there.

I don't know. Maybe this will help.
I've always heard from old combat soldiers who have told me that in the midst of a horrible firefight in battle, there are ALWAYS believers in a foxhole.
I guess in times of stress, duress and dire circumstances, the innate desire to believe in something bigger, better and more omnipotent than us, comes through.
ANd then again, "Oh My God" has become an instaneous reactive expression of shock and dismay. Sometimes, I wonder if in this day and age, it's anythingmore than that. There might not be any more meaning behind uttering it, then that. Sometimes I think it's just an automatic, knee jerk response.

For some, it could be just an expression, but I it could be that God has instilled just enough grace in every individual to seek Him in times of greatest need. I haven't thought about this before, but that seems like a good answer.
I am talking about traumatic situations here.

Because people who believed used such wording so freely, we grew up with it. I say it, but I never even think of it that way, I grew up in a society that has for a long time used it as a common form of expression.
It's like people with foul language that say "oh sh**!" I mean...no "sh**" is involved... They have just succumbed to a, now common, form of expression.

I usually say "Oh Crap!" and no, crap has never come to my rescue either--most nonbelievers equate god to a load oif crap, so it's basically the same thing, now isn't it?

Because it is part of the language, a way to say 'wow', 'oh no', stuff like that. Not because of religious reasons.

I've seen. I've seen more than most and my 1st reaction is " Father in heaven, have mercy on them" as I do not know if they were saved. I'm not sure why the Lord has allowed me to see so much tradjedy.

It's a figure of speech. Why would you read any more into it than that?
