Some breeds of dog are ONE owner dogs and just simply wont allow another person near them when they are in the company of their owner.
You can try bribing the precious pet with some food, and it will work until the food is gone, then the snarl will come back as fast as the food disappears.
Other dogs are easier to win over, and if you arent a regular guest at your sisters house, the dog may take longer to get to know you.
You may try sitting on the couch and letting the dog inside. See if it warms up to you after an hour or so.
If you dont think this is a safe alternative than just be glad there is a fence.

Since the dog was abused it probably has trust issues. I think you and your sister need to work together to get the dog to trust you. When your sister is expecting you have her put the dog on a leash, prepare yourself with really yummy treats to win the dog over. When you enter the home make your presence known to both your sister and the dog and let the dog approach you hold out the treat for him to smell and then give it to him. Also always extend your hand below his mouth rather than towards the top of his house so he can be sure your intentions are not too hurt him. I am sure in no time at all he will know you are a reward rather than a threat.

The dog is scared, and thinks it has to defend itself. When you approach it with something tasty, turn your body sideways, and if it is safe to do so crouch down so you are not as scary. Talk in a quiet, reassuring voice. If you can't get close enough, just start out by tossing it treats. Slowly get closer. Be patient, and be careful. Scared dogs will bite if they feel they cannot get away, and if he is on a chain, or confined, he may just do that. Good luck.

has your sister ever introduced you to the dog or had the dog see you with your sister so the dog knows you are not an intruder?
one thing i remember hearing one time would involve you wearing something of your sister's that had her scent on. so for example, a sweater or coat. that would mean the dog would recognize the scent of your sister on the clothing and might be more willing to accept you. just an idea.
it also sounds like he really had horrible owners before your sister rescued him so it could be he had bad experiences with strangers in the past.
thank your sister for rescuing him from that situation and giving him a loving home and a second chance. we need more people like that to help out our fellow animals :)

Show the dog that your not a threat to him. Hold your hand out and see if he will accept you or deny you. By deny, I mean growl or bite. Just don't get discouraged if he doesnt like you. It will take awhile since he was abused. Good Luck!

sit down. I tried everything with my neighbors dogs as I am good with dogs and my neighbor was freeking. I finially just sad down and the dog came up to me and started licking me. Now he is fine with me and a lot better with everyone. Even my yorkies feel threatened when people come to my house but once they sit down usually my dogs are fine.

The best thing to do is let the dog sniff you or feed it or buy the dog a chew toy and maybe he or she will like you for the first time

well... an abused dog will normaly act like that but if u act really nice to it and play with it and get to know him or her. he will love u in no time. but on the occasonal time, give him a doggy treat and give him a nice belly rub.

It's probably not only you, it's probably everyone but your sister. The dog needs more socialization with people.
