I was told it could take 6 weeks. It took mine 3 weeks. I had to send it to an embassy for a >60 day visa and that took another 12 days. There are options to speed the processing. These are companies that walk your passport through the passport process. Their people stand in the lines and they know what the're doing. Lost in the mail??? Most all of the passport application/processing offices here in Dallas are at the post offices.

I'm going to add a link (sorry) because word of mouth really sucks when it comes to all the details of travel and citizenship issues post 9/11. Honestly, the state department deals with these issues all day every day. They can help.

I applied for a passport like 5 years ago on my first trip abroad and it took 6 weeks. I came home and our maid stole it from me.She was the only person who could have gotten inside my room in the closet . And would have known or even cared to take it. I guess they fetch a nice price in Mexico.

So this time I went to the actuall passport office, it is easy you walk in tell them you want expedited service and you go have lunch, come back, and they hand you the passport. It will cost you more for this rush service.IT IS EXTREMELY WORTH IT
