Walking is probably the best exercise to start with, especially if the dog is very overweight. Once he gets used to walking you might try letting him trot with you alongside a bicycle. Start out slow and work to longer walks. If your dog likes to fetch, then play ball or frisbee with him. If he doesn't fetch, but is friendly with other dogs, maybe you can find a friend with an active, playful dog for him to romp with. Keep in mind that you need to let him rest periodically and have water for him to drink. And be sure to adjust his diet to what is proper for his size and activity level. Cut back or cut out the extra treats and people food too.

My big old coonhound was VERY overweight (winter was the worst for him) in November he weighed 112lbs. now with
a vet recommended diet of "Low-Calorie Royal Canin", strictly, he gets very little extra stuff AND a regular routine
walking and now running, playing and jumping, he is
now, only 41/2 months later, he is only 84lbs!!!! He is doing so well, the vet figures he can make it to 70lbs.
One thing I found was at first Farley was MISERABLE!!!! mean, crotchety, snappy and plain awful but we didn't give into him and he soon about a week or so got used to the smaller portions (you really need to measure it out---because like most you don't realize how much you really are give them and it is important to give them a regular amount).
Don't give up!!! Don't give in!!! And lots of fresh air and walks and your doggie will be slim and trim in no time and MUCH happier and better off in the long run. Praise really seems to work as well with most dogs!! Our biggest Happy day was the day Farley could jump into the back of the Jeep by himself (he had to be lifted before)!!! WOW it was Thrilling for all of us!!!! Find treats that your dog likes besides food, and praise and provide that treat ie Farley LOVES truck rides in the forest (coonhounds *wink*) so thats a treat for him. He also has got to like going to the vets because he gets weighed and when its "good news" alll the girls and the doctor love him up and tell him how wonderful he is and how good he looks etc. I'm always fasinated by how much dogs actually know and understand HONESTLY!!!
Anyway Good Luck on losing those extra pounds and I hope our tale will aid in your adventure

I had a "pudgy" dog, and I bought some tennis balls, and set them by the couch. Whenever I was watching TV, I would throw them constantly, so that he was always moving. I also went running with him, and took him swimming in a local creek. What also worked for him was a stuffed animal he could "fight" all the time, so when I was working on my computer, he had something to keep him moving. I also better regulated his sleep patterns, just like humans! Hope that helps!

Bench presses and weights. Just kidding, walking or running to fetch a ball in the park are enough, plus feed him less. Ask your vet if you're not sure. You can get special dog food for weight control.

You don't need exercises for the dog. Just throw a tennis ball a little more often. Basically, just play with your dog. Also, feed it less.

first, give him less food; like if you feed him 3 meals a day, try taking it to 2 small meals, or just 1 medium meal, second, walk him, take him to the dog park, or just play Frisbee in the back yard!

You should walk him every day about twice. ( make sure you dont walk him after he eats) How long you walk him depends on the breed and weight.
