I say hip hop can be both -- Art and Garbage.

Art -- because they are some musical acts that convey messages that have meaning, whether they are positive or negative. Theres nohing wrong with certain truths being presented for all to see. Especially songs that speak about social evolution.

Garbage -- The whole "Pimps Up, Hos Down" image is more then a little sexist. Anything you she a rapper sliding a credit between the cheeks of a woman's rear-end means that there is something wrong with the genre. Its terrible and the women the "video girls" that allow are just as much to blame. Also, bragging about how rich you are (aka look at my "bling bling") isn't necessarily a good habit to project. Heck, we can each arrogant boastfulness from Donald Trump.

Rap is an art form mastered by the coffee house poets, but most of the rap on radio is violent, a protest, I guess about life on the wrong side of society it self. It 's funny to see white kids in moms car playing rap as loud as it goes, in touch with the sting of racial injustice. The violence toward women and authority figures is aimed at young men and I hope for the rest of us that they are taught better values than what they get from rap.

Most of the hip-hop and rap music played on the radio is heavily censored and they blank out all the violent, obscene and sexual lyrics. That could be why you think they are not offensive.

If you don't think hip-hop and rap are littered with violent, obscene and sexual lyrics, you must be living on the moon. That is ALL those guys rap about!

different kind of music is going to come from different aspects of life. rappers rap about what their life is, what they know. its ok to call a girl a ***** and not be offensive in the hood. also remember when rock and roll came out in the 50's many parents were against it and felt it would corrupt their kids. now that is how people feel about rap. its mostly white people who complain too even though white people were the ones who forced blacks into second class educations and job discrimination which eventually created the hood. and gansta rap

Give me some rap/hip-hop with substance and from some guys who are truly from the hood and truly know the life, like Ice-T, and I will be more than happy to listen to it.

As for the mainstream crap that's haunting the radios, please quit making me hear it.

Much of this music that focuses on violence and distruction are very similar to music for 'white' audiences that focus on suicide and death. There are points in our lives (normally in the teenage years) that we obsess over this sort of stuff- and so there are companies that cater to it.

"What is a rapper if he's not talking about guns, bitches and hitting switches?"

J Davis Trio, IIRC, but I can't recall the track name. Anyway, my answer is it's not, it's just that's what sells, so that's what gets airplay, so that's all you've heard.
