Some good exercises for your dog would include chasing a ball or frisbee. I don't know how old your dog is, but agility is something that energetic dogs love. Agility classes might be an option.
A great exercise for your dog both physically and mentally is to provide your dog with social time with other dogs. Not many people realize how important it is to allow their dog's to be dogs and do what dogs do.
A dog park with other dogs is a great idea. We often play search and rescue with our own dog's indoors. This game is played by allowing your dog to thoroughly smell the toy, treat, etc. and then making him stay in position until you hide it. Then you teach him to "find it". You'll be surprised how good your dog's nose and sense of smell really is.
See the following link for more details on training and exercise.

swimming, playing ball, going to a park or beach, running, agility, Frisbee, herding. anything that would come natural to the dog you have. ex: if you have a lab, they are great at swimming and love water. if you have a pit, they love to pull things, Australian Shepard and collies are great at agility. look up what your dog was breed for, back when they were working dogs and not family members.
