Please don't tell me to simply install SP2, it crashes out my system and I have to safe boot and uninstall it to get my system to work again. If I could install it, I would have.

That said.

I have no choice it seems but to install SP2, but I seem to have to do a clean install in order to do so.

If you know how I can do this without wiping my hard drive, please tell me.

If not, do you know where I can find a checklist that will tell me where all my KEY files are hiding so that I don't lose them when I do wipe the hard drive?

I am NOT using a pirate version and SP2 installs just fine, it just for whatever reason crashes out my system and I have to uninstall it. Geez, man.

If you have another computer get a router and make a network with that computer and put all youre hard drive in that computer then install the windows xp sp2 then put back the hard drive. it might take some money but you have youre hard drive.

option 2 is get everything out of youre hard drive and mail it to your self.

Files that are hidden are all Windows system files, by and large. Windows also by default asks you about accessing Program Files and Windows files, but you just say yah, I want to see 'em.
However, this does you no good when it comes to formatting your hard drive - programs have to be installed and this involves more than just program file folders....

As far as saved files, like video files and document and text files and picture files and stuff like that, they could be anywhere, largely in My Documents, if you have been going along with Microsoft's defaults.

But SP2 should not "crash out your system" at all. There is something wrong with your XP installation or with the SP2 installation program, in my opinion. You can get MS to send you free their SP2 installation CD, instead of trying to install over the net, which might be a source of your problem.

Well, firstly i don't understand what xactly u mean by crash after u install sp2...
nyways before u install sp2 please make sure u disable any security software like norton or mcafee. after doing this install sp2 in safe mode from the disk or the download that u might have.. and it should go fine

and in case u still would like to wipe off everything then the only data that would be useful or the one u can safely backup would be in c:\documents and settings\"different user folders"
and the only four folders reqd from there would be desktop, documents, startmenu, favorites. only these four folders acontain user files unless u save them somewhere elese manually.. rest all are windows fileas and softwares that u willhave to install in case u wipe off and reinstall xp

You'll need to do a repair installation of Windows. Here's how to do that, with screen shots and all. A repair installation will allow you to keep all your files and folders, the only thing you'll have to replace are the Windows updates.

After you're done, go to the Windows Update site and download all the Windows updates. (it will include SP2)
