18 year old is 226 lbs 5'10" male
20 year old is 148 lbs 5'4" female

18 year old male is burning more calories per hour than the 20 year old female because he is moving more mass, thus exerting more energy - but it took the female very little effort to have a higher heart rate than the male.

Heart rate female - 159bpm
Heart rate male - 130 bpm
This is when both are going at same pace. I can't seem to figure out why (since I am the female and I am wondering if it would mean my heart is abnormal or if his heart is either athletically fit or abnormally slow) Thank you!

Athletes have even lower heartrates for the same caloric output. Why? Their hearts pump more efficiently. In your example, the female's heart is less efficient... probably due to smaller chambers.

I believe the answer lies in the fact that males have 5% more muscle mass than females. There is slightly less strain on the heart to fuel the muscles since they're designed to move. That doesn't mean your heart is overworked or his heart is more athletic, it means you're both pretty normal. Whichever of you trains to tone up your muscles will probably see the most improvement.
