I have a himalayan and she is so matted. She has an appointment with the groomer Friday, but I wanted to try and give her some relief now. Any suggestions?

I have a Maine Coon and every few months, his backside becomes matted, even with daily brushing. (He's a big guy)

If you want to try and clip them yourself, which is hard to do but not to hard if you have a steady hand, try using an electric shaver/razor. Or if you don't have one handy, use a dull tipped scissors to cut. You should cut a mat vertically, moving out away from the skin from the base of the mat. That way you cut the matted hair lying horizontally, but leave the hair that's still vertical. You'll be breaking big mats into smaller and smaller ones, and you'll have nowhere near as big a hole when you're done.

But if you don't want to chance anything, using your fingers is the next best thing. Pull them apart slowly and give your kitty a treat for being such a good girl.

Good luck.

Well, you may want to bathe her or use a clean cat wipe on her. Then brush her. First, you should, again, bathe her. Then, take the brush. Don't dig it deep into her fur, but lightly, and quickly, brush over the top of the fur. Keep going deeper every time until all fur layers are un-tangled.

you can buy a brush at the pet store and brush from the bottom up. you take the matted spot and brush from the bottom then go upward and then you can get the matts out. its like when your hail gets all knotty after you wash your hair and you brush from botton of your hair up and then you get the knots out. my cat has long fur and that what i do and it helps.

try to comb it up off the skin then cut it above the comb this will prevent you from cutting the skin-----------start brushing her after the groomer comes so she gets used to it and you won't have to go through this again

the only thing you can do, if the knots are not right to the skin is cut them out, otherwise just wait till her appointment.
