I'm a senior in high school. I live in New York. I know for a fact for my career, I'm going to be in Criminal Justice area. I've ALWAYS been interested in it.
I'm tied between two jobs. CSI and Police Detectives. I want to be a police detective and investigate crimes and tlak to the suspects and I also want to be a CSI to analyze the data at the crime scene. Can I do all this? I know I have to go to college but my question is: Do I have to go to college for both sepreately, for me to do both jobs? For example, me going to college for the six years of a CSI and then the 2-4 years for a police detective? PLEASE ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS! Thanks!

I don't think you can do both. If you actually want to catch criminals youre better off being a detective. If you want to provide data to the police so that they can catch criminals then work in a lab.

I think it depends on the city you work in. Small Civil Service areas typically send their police officers for training to become detectives. They will get basic training to handle all those situtations without a degree in either one. You have to pass a civil service test instead.

For Counties and State jobs, you probally have to pick one and go to school for them seperatley. The detective on the street does the questioning of suspects and witnesses but sumbits the DNA and most other data that needs to be analyzed to a tech. The detective doing the questioning goes through special training provided by the department on issues like lying, public speaking and etc... The tech has to have a degree in a bio field or computer science.

I would talk to the dept. you are considering joining and also talk to the FBI or view their site for some details because they do most of the training for firearms, DNA tech and etc... anyway.

I hope this helps... good luck! :)

Like you said it is not like a TV Show. You have to decide. Detective or Crime Scene Investigator. ANYHOW before you can even become a detective or CSI to have to work as a regular uniform police officer for about a year.

College will get you in the door when it's time for advancement but you have to do you time on the job.

Many high paying police jobs don't even require a college degree and pay tuition while on the he job.

Think about applying to one of them.

Tiffani, as one who recently retired from a long career in law enforcement, I strongly suggest you pick another line of work. You'll be continually disappointed and you can no longer depend on government for a secure career. You're right, its not like on TV.
