If so on the highlights, what color should I get?

Go ahead and get highlights. Make sure to get dark goldish or maybe reddish highlights and not white or platinum highlights. You don't want to look like a skunk! You could get 2 different shades- dark gold, and light brown or something. Don't get chunky highlights, get fine ones, so your hair won't look bad when they grow out.

If your hair is really dark, like a chocolate color I would probably say to leave it dark brown. Dark brown hair is usually really shiny and lustrous so there would be no need to add highlights to it. Also, highlights would probably show up too much making it look streaky. If you have hair that is somewhat like a cocoa color light brown and golden streaks would look really pretty. Rachel Bilson is known for her gold on brunette hair style. If you want to get highlights, find pictures of people with hair similar to yours with highlights that you like that way you get exactly what you want!

Highlights are always a nice addition when spring and summertime rolls around. If you are not sure just get a few and don't do them so light. Later on you add more if you want and go lighter with the next ones. If you dont like it just color it back brown.

I wouldn't try for blonde highlights they usually turn out really brassy. but you can do a lighter shade of brown or a copper or a red. If your hair is natural find a salon that uses REDKEN COLOR FUSION they have double blondes, reds and browns formulated for people with naturally dark hair

I have the same color you described and i got blone highlights and love them. Honey colored highlights are also great if your not sure about getting them because they look nice but are more subtle.
