I got into a patch of poison ivy (I guess - actually, I don't know how I got it..somewhere at the barn) and I didn't realize it was poison ivy (never had it before)so I was scratching it and now it is all over my arms, and it's horrible. I've tried calamine lotion and nothing is working, and it's so bad to the point where I've got huge blister-things everywhere. Anyone know of anything to help soothe and take the itch away? I'd be appreciative forever!

The trick to treating poison ivy is to dry it out and treat it with steroid therapy. Your doctor will probably prescribe you a Medrol dose pack that comes with very specific instructions for each day. Most importantly, EAT with this medication and all steroids, they can be very hard on your stomach. The doctor may also prescribe any of a wide variety of topical steroids or anti-itch formulas. Some doctors prefer to steer clear of topical steroid creams if you're already taking a systemic steroid because even topicals can be absorbed to cause an additive systemic effect. Research the area and see if there is a compounding pharmacy in the area. They can compound some great over-the-counter remedies for poison ivy to dry out the skin, these usually contain many things such as menthol, camphor, diphenhydramine (Benadryl), alcohol (which really helps in the drying process,) and many more GREAT ingredients. The menthol and camphor produce a great soothing effect along with everything else.

Feel better soon!

After gettting the pills or Shot, you can go to any pharmacy and buy Nu-Skin or Zanfel, poison ivy scrub. It claims to bind with the poisionous oils (urushinol) and get rid of them. I have found that it works in taking away the itch, but definitely does not cure the poision Ivy. Warning, Zanfel is expensive and is basically the same stuff as Nu-Skin.

The emergency room will help, but if you want an over the counter method then there is always and oatmeal bath. These are notorious for helping with chicken pox and poison ivy. Hope this helped.

Call the doctor's to get an appointment before it gets worse! I have had it all over my body before and the doctor gave me a steroid perscription that made the poison ivy go away asap.

Call you doctors office and ask if they can prescribe something. They will give you cortisone which will take away the imflammatory response. Beyond benydrl and lotions, there is not much over the counter stuff that does much.

you got contact dermatitis , poison ivy is very strong sensitizing to skin , so you need steroid (systemic) and antihistamine ( systemic route ) , you need also to avoid further exposure of poison ivy , you can use local steroid cream with medium strength to get rid of itching and blaster

Go to the emergency room. They should prescribe a powerful steroid ( cream of pill ) for it.
In the meantime you can try over the counter hydrocortisone.

Apply rubbing alcohol to the infected area.
Rinse with water (any water).
Wash up with soap and warm water.

Aloe vera, apply liberally, as many times as needed.

Make a paste with salt, baking soda and water and apply.

You might need to call your doctor and ask. If not allergic you could take benedryl in tablet or syrup. It stops the itching from the inside.

bleech, it hurts really bad, but it kills the oils from the poison ivy so if you can deal with the pain it will speed up the heeling process
