I'm 19, have about three to four grand to spend (max), and commute over 100 miles a day. I need a car with good gas mileage, and a reliable engine. Ive browsed the internet and heard mixed reviews on what will suit me, everything from an old sports car (reliable engine) to a hybrid (too expensive for me).

that's an opinionated question, it's what you like and you will be able to find a decent car for $4,000. if you look around, I would suggest a 4 cyl. if you want gas mileage and try to find a car that has around 70,000 miles or less.

With the commute, your best bet is a smaller 4 cylinder. A Civic or Corolla would be your best bet. They run forever, are reliable, economical and will not lose a lot of value due to the high miles you will put on them. A Civic in your price range requires a little more maintenance. The timing belt and water pump need to be replaced at 90k intervals.

If you are willing to get and even older vehicle, and Accord or Camry would be good choices. You get a little more room, but sacrifice a little fuel economy too.

I questioned my wife when she bought it before we were married...but her kia sephia is fantastic...I have just under 100,000 miles on the 2001 model and have spend only $1000 in repairs on it...that doesn't count oil changes of course. I got 73,000 miles out of the original brake pads and I think it only blue books at about $3000 right now. It gets about 26 miles to the gallon highway and about 23 city...I was very skeptical of this car at first...It is a small car with only a 4 cylinder, but I can live without the power for my commute.

Honda Civic would be my choice.. very dependable( hHonda engines are great),good gas mileage 35mpg., and there are a lot of used ones around. To get the best price, buy from a private owner if possible, rather than a car dealership.
Good luck!

Factor in the cost of insurance as well. Get something under 5 grand, you might as well carry only liability on it.

Don't get something with a high theft rate, like an Camery or Accord.

I have a VW Jetta diesel TDI, but it may be out of your price range.

I highly recommend VW though.

Subaru impreza's are both underpriced and underrated by the general public. Go for an impreza. You won't be disappointed and the price will be right. Should be able to find a late 90s impreza for your budget.
