Rhode Island white, Barred Plymoth rock, and Orpingtons are all excellent dual purpose birds.

I'd go with the Orpington. This bird is an excellent layer, even through winter. The hens will brood (if you plan to brood your own chicks), but aren't "broody". And they are excellent meat birds.

They are large, weighing in at around eight pounds at butchering age (with a butchered weight of around five pounds). They lay up to two hundred eggs a year (averaging closer to 150). And they are cold hardy and somewhat self reliant. Oh, and they are docile, so it's easier to collect eggs.

Drawbacks to the orpington? They have white skin, not yellow. And you have to cull the layers, since only good genetic birds lay big eggs. (unless you don't mind having a range of egg sizes)

The best dual purpose breed I know of is the black sexlink. They are a cross between a Rhode Island Red rooster and a Barred Rock hen. They develop really well and can produce a better then average amount of eggs. They also tend be be heavy breasted.
