Maybe, he thinks your are one wonderful lady and he is wondering what your name would look like if you were married. It sounds like he has some good feelings about you.

This is actually how my dad proposed to my mom. He took her out to lunch one day and while they waited for the food my mom kept "doodling" her name on a piece of paper. After writing her full name a few times, she started to do it once more and my dad stopped her before she did her last name and he took the pen from her and wrote his last name. Married for almost 23 years!

he likes you. he wanted to see what your name would sound like if you ever got married. (i think thats what surname means. . .) i try that with all the people in my school to see what the funniest name i can come up with is. lol. lots of fun.

he's using it as the decision to propose in the future. If your name doesn't look good with his why bother? he also wants to make sure he won't embarress himself when he says it outloud. jk
