The secondary issues from it can cause major health problems. Have you looked it up. Two things I can think of are: the person 'refluxes' at night, and the acid can cause airway problems, like reactive airway, asthma. (and those open up a whole new can of worms0
The other issue is Barretts esophagitis, lesions in the esophagus, possibly from reflux that can lead to cancer.
So, it is something you want to take care of!

You can develope cancer from a direct complication of acid reflux.
If you do not get it under control you can develope cancer in your esophogus from the acid that comes up from your stomach.
No kidding.
I find that ginger root pills ( sold at Wal-mart and Walgreens) along with eating smaller meals is an extremely efficient way to control acid reflux.

It can burn a hole in your esophagas. Which can in turn cause internal bleeding. Thats what happened to my father about a year ago. They couldn't figure out what was going on with him, and dropped a scope down his throat, they found the hole and gave him antibiotics. If you have it often I would suggest seeing a doctor or getting some over the counter medication.

It can cause cancer and it can cause your airways to become irritated and swollen. It can cause so much swelling that it is similar to a constant asthma attack....but even asthma medications don't offer a lot of relief.

If your esophagus erodes and the acid causes a hole. I guess you could die if you didn't get treatment right away.
