i'm not sure if it should be required, but F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of the best American writers! The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite novels. It's not even that hard to read.
if you really wanted to, there are 2 movie versions: one from the 1970s with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and one from 1990s with Mira Sorvino. Both editions are pretty good.

One reason to study the GG is that it does portray some aspects of the 20's at the same time studnets are studying history of the 20's. Plus it is a simple read with 2 movies to select for review if desired. The Redford movie is word for word from the book more or less. The 1990's version is a bit smoother but diverts from book copy.

Thats was the only book I think I ACTUALLY read in HS. I enjoyed it! Besides that fact I think it enlightens teens on that era. The 1920s...First World War. Not to mention that the book was writen by a great American author...F. Scott Fitzgerald. If it still doesnt interest atleast rent the movie. Robert Redford did an amazing job!

They shouldn't require students to read it! It's horrible! I wish I could have back every second I spent reading it for junior english class.
