You are not allowed to spit when at position of attention, or parade rest. Those are the big ones. You're not allowed to spit in formation either. That's another no-no. Basically, any situation where spitting would be considered disrespectful within reason to a senior NCO or commissioned officer, is where you don't want to spit. Whenever I need to spit, as long as I'm not locked up in position of attention or parade rest, I will break ranks, goto the rear of the formation a good distance away, and spit on the curb or at the base of a tree, anyplace where I don't see people having to sit down later on in the duty day.

However, everywhere else is fair game. Considering how many people use smokeless tobacco in the service, and how smoking is verboten within 60 feet of any building (DoD directive) it is not uncommon to see dip spit ... everywhere.

I don't smoke or dip, but since joining the service, I have become a habitual spitter (I would never have done so as a civilian). It's just the most efficient way of clearing your mouth on a long run or a long, long road march.

When you are at rest in formation you can spit, but not at attention or parade rest. You are definately not allowed to spit on another person or a civilian ever. Even with enemies, you cannot spit on them unless you are fighting for your life, detainees have rights.

I am sure you are allowed, but not while in uniform. I know people.
