Now that I bought a bag, I've noticed that my puppy's eyes are weeping all the time. Is this related to the new food? I am so mad after getting home and reading up on the ingredients, this food is full of fillers.

Holistic vets will tell you every time that these low-grade protein sources -- corn, soy, and wheat -- are responsible for a great many digestive upsets.

I suggest two things:

1) Watch the movie at http://healthfulpetzone.com to learn more about ingredients in pet foods, swtich your puppy to something WITHOUT corn, wheat, soy, and by-products, and then...

2) Check out holistic vet http://DogtorJ.net. He is very big on avoiding food allergies and celiac disease in animals and he covers gas and digestive upsets in dogs.

As for the weepy eyes... your puppy probably picked up a virus.

Pick up some l-lysine capsules at the grocery store and sprinkle it on his food. It works wonders for viral infections. If it doesn't help, get back to your vet so that it won't get worse.

Why do you listen to that type of advice? Before switching to a new brand of dog food, you should research the ingredients first. Vets will always recommend Hills Science Diet for an "unknown reason" (don't know why but they always do). Hill's dog food contains by-products as well.

You should stay with Royal Canin, I've raised my 2 American Pitbull Terriers with Royal Canin ever since they were 6 weeks old. They're 7 months old now, and they still love it. They don't have bad breath smell, they relieve themselves only twice a day, they tend to eat less and less as they grow older because of the amount of protein it contains, they have very healthy coat and skin, and their weight and body mass is perfect (one weights 66 lbs, and the other one weights 73 lbs); and they're only 7 months. They're not fat, but muscles.

Royal Canin is top of the line dog food, you should switch back to it. Do some research, and keep feeding your puppy with RC; you will not regret it.

Science Diet is a crappy food...you can do much better. Sorry but Science Diet will not prevent gas..with all the corn and soy it is apt to cause more gas. I would go back to the Royal Canin (unless there is an ingredient such in it that causes allergies to your dog) and get some charcoal dog biscuits to give for gas prevention.
Actually you can get even better food then Royal Canin...such as Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul,Canidae, Innova, California Natural, Blue Buffalo..just to name a few.

Your puppy might just have an eye infection. It is common in puppies. I don't think it is the food. I have fed all of my dogs Hill's for years. I had a border collie live to 21 years old--mostly because of the food. She had good sight and hearing and was in great health. I currently have 4 dogs and feed them all Hill's. They do great on it and I would never change it. Your puppy could have gotten an eye inf. from the vet clinic, there are always germs floating around there.

You were taken by the this food is better thing. I learned never to buy food that a vet recomends unless I check it out first. I hope it wasn't too expensive.
If you pup has bad gas then I would suggest a more natural puppy food. One with out wheat or corn. That is usually the cause of the gas, too hard for them to digest.

It may be the food, but now is the pollen season. If you're not happy with the ingredients switch back. Although he is a vet, he's not God.
If it is an allergy, I use this Wonderful nutritional product that helps with all types of allergies, skin conditions, itchiness, hot spots, digestive problems including the flatulence problem, red eyes from allergies, shedding, and the list goes on and on and the product is guaranteed.
The website is www.dinovite.com
It says it may take up to 30 days to see a result, it only took us a week to notice a huge improvement and my doggie loves me sooo much for it!
Take care, and best of luck

Yes, I agree with everyone else. Hill's is garbage. My puppy was eating it when I got her. But I immediately began introducing Performatrin ultra, which is hollistic. She looks in better shape than her littermates, and her coat is so much more beautiful. I would switch foods asap. Oh, and yes my vet tried to defend Hill's to me too.

Science Diet is over priced "crap" food. As you saw, it has corn and soy as well as other fillers.

I had the same gas issue with my Shih Tzu pup. (This sweet little baby could blow the windows out of the house!) Anyway, I changed her over to Chicken Soup of the Puppy Lover's Soul, and I haven't had a problem since.

Good luck!

Well, I hate that I'm going to have to be honest with you, but HERE GOES:

I was a Veterinary Technician while I was in college. I was HANDSOMELY rewarded for suggesting the "special brands" of food to our clients.

Here's the truth: Veterinarians DO NOT feed their own animals that crap. They prepare their OWN puppy food, as I have done for litter after litter. My pups never even see the Vet until it's shot time. I have the Vet look them over, administer the rabies vaccination, and then it's back home to me. I have 5 years puppy-rearing experience. For my pups, around the 4th week I introduce boiled rice. After 8 weeks, I introduce boiled rice with a small amount of chicken meat mixed in. After they have made it past the whelping stage (very hard but NECESSARY) I just start adding more and then more of the chicken mixture, broth and boiled rice. It costs me about $2.00 per 5 quarts and they thrive on it.

Good luck, and the Vet is robbing you BLIND my friend.

I am a vet tech, and all we sell is science diet. I feed it to all my dogs and they dont have gas and less bowel movements. Its a good food, and you dont have to feed them as much, maybe because of the fillers. I dont think the eyes being running have to do with the food, but you never know. He could be allergic to it.
