Use Aloe Vera. I would look for the purest form of it at
Wal-mart, Target, or Walgreens. Try to buy the 100% Aloe Vera with no fragrance or anything else added to it. It takes the pain away.
More importantly, if you are still going outside while you still have a sunburn, wear a long sleeve shirt , sweatpants, and a hat instead of shorts and a tank top.

1) Hydrotherapy
Brief baths, showers, and towel compresses can help to keep the sunburn cool and hydrated. The temperature of the water should be cool to lukewarm. Water that is too hot can strip the natural oils of the skin.
For a mild sunburn, try taking a cool bath or shower. Or place wet, cool towels on the affected areas for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day.
2) Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe is a plant native to Africa. The long green leaves contain aloe gel. Aloe gel is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects and is used topically to soothe burned skin and to help heal wounds.
Topical Vinegar
Plain white vinegar is a popular sunburn remedy. Although there is no evidence behind this folk remedy, many people who try it say it helps to relieve pain when applied to the skin.
Vinegar can be applied as a compress. Soak clean towels in a half water, half vinegar solution. Wring the towels and apply on the affected areas, avoiding contact with broken skin and the eye area.
Another option is to fill a clean spray bottle with the half vinegar, half water solution and spritz it onto skin.
4) Stay Hydrated
It is important to drink plenty of fluids, because we lose more water when we're out in the heat and the sun. Dehydration can cause headaches and fatigue.

You have been given some very dangerous advice on this site for example to take the hottest shower possible. Your skin is BURNED and you should not, repeat not, burn it any more until it heals properly. It will take time and patience for it to heal, in the meantime you can use some simple home made remedies to relieve the pain & redness. A couple of teaspoons of bicarb in a tepid bath will help with the pain & natural yoghurt is very good also. Aloe vera is also very good, but try to avoid any creams with lanolin in them as if your skin is very burned it can continue burning when applied. Lanolin has a very high natural fat content and it exacerbates the heat, in other words you keep frying . The area you have been burned will always be prone to being burned, so make sure you ALWAYS wear a high spf sunscreen.

Some skin-friendly ingredients to look for in store-bought products are aloe vera, cocoa butter, vitamin E, lavender oil, and tea.
White or apple cider vinegars can be used to hasten healing, soothe your pain, and prevent blistering and peeling. Dampen a wash cloth with the vinegar and periodically dab the liquid onto the burns. Vinegar can also be added to bath water.
Pretend you’re a hot dog! Slather some mustard onto those sunburns.
Crush a raw tomato and apply it to the burned areas. This will be painful, but you will find that it speeds healing.
-Hope this helps!

The best thing that I have found to use is by Ocean Potion it is called ICE it is an instant burn relief product. It has Aloe Vera/Lidocaine (for the pain) and Tea Tree Extract. The lotion is blue and is ice cold when you first put it on. It takes the pain away fairly quickly but it doesn't eliminate the redness right away. My husband burns easily and it is the only thing he will use. You can get it at walmart where they have sun tan lotion.

spray the affected area with colloidal silver to promote rapid tissue healing and take 250mg of the amino acid L-Cysteine*, which specifically promotes the healing of burns. Optima Healthcare’s soothing aloe vera gel is 99.9% pure and will not only take the sting out, but also act as a disinfectant. It costs £4.99 for 200ml. Burt’s Bees comfrey ointment in the first aid kit. It costs just £3.50 from Farmacia (0207-404 8808) and is fantastically healing. (I think Boots ,somme departent stores or health shops might sell this).
You can get aloe vera from Holland & Barret £2.99

Aloe Vera is wonderful for a sunburn. The spray kind is easier to apply if you can not stand the rubbing the gel in.
Also, Noxzema is good for sunburns too.

Use a vitamin E moisturiser. It works by replenishing the moisture in your skin and helps aid the healing. I use it when I get sunburn and it works a treat.
Failing that a warm bath (not hot) with bicarbonate of soda in it can help ease the pain and the burning.

Along with Amber D's response I would tell you to take Tylenol or Motrin for the pain and to reduce the temp increase that you get from burns. Also you may want to think about worrying some sunscreen.

Sunburn is a radiation burn and should be treated like any other burn, ie:scald or dry burn (iron). You need to run it under a cold tap or apply ice for about 10mins, no less or it will not have any affect. You may need to stand under a running cold shower? Hope this helps?
