how rare is it to see a owl in california?

ok so i live in northern cali(bay area near san jose) and yea last night in my neighboorhood i came home and saw a huge *** owl sittin on top of a light, ive never seen one around here before, has anyone else ?

They are not rare, just not seen often, being night birds. They also are hunters, so they tend to stay hidden. I will see them out perched on poles or tree tops from time to time. The owl you saw was almost certainly a Great Horned Owl. They are in your area and are really great birds. Nice sighting!
