I've already asked this question, but I was extremely disappointed with the results. The question is: Explain the deadly sin of pride. Include Scripture if you can. The most elaborate and correct answer wins.

Q, is your answer the only one you can possibly give? It is a true sin.

Seven Deadly Sins:
Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

The seven deadly sins in the Christian tradition were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. They are pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth. Gregory also compiled a list of the seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude.

Here are some bible verses related to these sins:

Pride

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Avarice/Greed

Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Envy

Job 5:2 For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Wrath/Anger

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Lust

Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Gluttony

1 Corinthians 15:32 ..., what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow we die.

Proverbs 23:1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Sloth

Matthew 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

This isn't elaborate and this doesn't have scripture in it, but it's a 'deadly sin' because pride can cause you to, for instance, if you are fighting a war and you know you will lose, but the other side offers a peace treaty and you don't accept because you are too proud, you will ultimatly loose the war, your land, your life because of your pride. Not to mention taking lots with you. So, pride affects your judgements and can make you make decisions that are not good.

Actually, there is no Biblical list of seven deadly sins, for God has made it abundantly clear throughout scripture that all and any sins (transgressions of God's Law) are deadly and will result in our damnation.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
James 2:10
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

However specifically refering to pride

*Proverbs 16:18
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

No good can ever come from a proud heart.

*1 John 2
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
*Proverbs 15:25
The LORD will destroy the house of the proud: but he will establish the border of the widow.
*Romans 1
30Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Pride is evidence of a lack of the Holy Spirit. Lack of the Spirit is lack of Jesus in your life.

*Romans 8
8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Pride is essentially lifting yourself up. Accepting Jesus as your Saviour is placing Him above yourself. That is hard to do when you are full of pride. In order to place Jesus first you must humble yourself.

Envy is often the root of pride. Pride is the opposite of humility. A Christian cannot grow spiritually if he is not humble.

Envy represents a form of sadness and therefore a refusal of charity; the baptized person should struggle against it by exercising good will. Envy often comes from pride; the baptized person should train himself to live in humility:

Would you like to see God glorified by you? Then rejoice in your brother's progress and you will immediately give glory to God. Because his servant could conquer envy by rejoicing in the merits of others, God will be praised.329

Peace and every blessing!

Without pride we'd all be in a world of sh*t, nobody would have any self-esteem. Therefore, I find it impossible to consider pride to be any kind of "sin", much less the deadly kind.

Pride is the root of almost every other sin. It can cause you to murder, steal, covet, commit adultry, dishonor your parents, lie, gossip, put ourselves above others, and most of all, to hate and reject God, to the point that we commit the unpardonable sin. Our inflated egos can make us do any ungodly act imaginable. This can be found all through scripture, from the Garden of Eden to the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Pride is number one on God's hit list. because of the insidious way's i inserts itself into the fabric of life , and destroy's all that it touches, It caused lucifer to rebel and brought down one third of the angelic host, it caused adam and eve to sin against God and bought about the fall of mankind, God says pride comes before destruction, pride causes one to lose sight of the natural order of things. one thing out of place, everything out of place. angels, man, creation.God has a plan for setting everything back in order, but he must first contend with the rebellion and sin issue pride unleashed on creation. man's pride blind's him to the path which God has so graciously provided for him. he goes about seeking his own path to redemption, in effect he is taking the same road satan took at the the beginning, when his pride set his will against God's. God hates pride because it seperates him from the creation he loves, God is love, so this situation cannot go unresolved.
