I'm honestly pretty bad- I've been told that I'm tone deaf, and there is a gap between my chest and head voices about as wide as the grand canyon. Is it possible for me to learn how to sing moderately well, or am I stuck?

I am living proof that a person cannot learn to sing! Can't carry a tune in a bucket,or so I'm told.

Innate ability counts for a lot, when you are dealing with people who want to go into singing as a profession. That's a pretty small percentage, despite all the foo-foo-raw generated by such shows as American Idol. Most folks prefer to sing for themselves. This is something that can be learned, but one has to know where the limits are.
I mean, we all have two legs ( except for that small percentage) but how many of us turn out to be track runners.
Most of us are happy if we can make the jog around the block without falling over. Training helps! But nobody with my build is ever gonna get near that oval track. ( I'm not too worried about it)
Since you proclaim yourself tone-deaf ( which is also one of those truly small percentages), you will need more patience with yourself than others. You will also need lots of time with a piano or guitar so that you can always check up on yourself as far as pitches go. Most singers have learned how to anticipate the next pitch coming up, they actually hear it before they need to. This is also something that can be trained, and is the most effective cure for "tone-deafness". You just start paying more attention to what you are hearing, and then translate that sensation into your voice. It doesn't have to be beautiful or powerful at the beginning, those are merely distractions at this point. Concentrate on finding the link-up between what you hear, and how you transmit it.
This is standard ear-training, by the way. It should work.
( True tone deafness, or congenital amusia, as it is known by doctors, is a dysfunction of the brain. They haven't figured out if it is curable or not yet. I would imagine you don't have it)
Best wishes and keep on singing

Yes, people can learn to sing. Usually, the actors and actresses you find on Broadway are born with natural talent, but it IS possible to get rid of being tone deaf. It'll take a lot of practice and a lot of time and patience, but it can work.

i personally think that it is both because if you don't have a good voice you can learn to sing by going to your vocal director or teacher. But sometimes people are born to konw how to sing so the already have the ability. if you try hard, you can learn how to sing.

I think it's mostly an enviornmental thing. I was raised singing in a musical family and I turned out to have a good singing voice and a good bit of musical talent.

Yes it is possible for you to sing . You need to learn how to control your own voice. Everyone's voice is different just like snowflakes. Not one are the same. Find how your voice works and improve as best as you can while you are having fun.
