It's pretty much an excuse for being weak minded. I used to have a cocaine addiction but got over it when I grew up and realized I was being a selfish brat.
Yeah so I guess with that frame of mind you could also say that fat people have food addictions and aren't just lazy people without self control.

Addiction is definitely a disease, but it begins with a choice. My Mother was a heavy cocaine and opiate user and my father was an alcoholic. Because of these factors I was told I had a 90% higher risk of becoming an addict. I think there may be many genetic factors. I have many compulsive behaviors but I have never used anything harder than cannabis. This is a conscious decision. After seeing my Mother overdose a number of times I knew what I would use and what I wouldn't. Addiction is very serious problem that is severely exacerbated by the drug laws. If we treated botanical psychoactive addiction the same way we do alcohol addiction, things would be much better.

in my view drug addiction is the way people escape from a life that they dont, or refuse to understand. Confusion is a dangerouse thing, people with an addiction need to be helped to see that its not the only way to enjoy life, or to 'feel' and that lifes true meaning will show its self with time. Im speaking from experience, even now i have my re-lapses and during that time i feel helpless, i know people are willing to help but see no point if i do not enjoy life, its a bleak place to be and i cannot even begine to explane it. Addiction is the easy way out, its escapism, avoiding your problems by being someone eltse, but at the same time its the hard way because at the back of your mind your always aware thet something is not right with you, you may hate life a little less but you still do not enjoy it, and in the end the negative feelings are your down falll.
Addiction is not an excuse, people who desperatly need an escape from life are usually suffering from mental problems and cannot controll the snowball of emotions that lead to the terrible effects of addiction.
Addiction to anything is not fun, not pretty, and deffinatly not used as an excuse. What i wouldnt give to just live a happy 'un-addicted' life...

Some say it is a disease. Some say it isn't. I guess it would depend on how you define disease.
I believe that drug addiction is just that.. an addiction. It can be overcome. You just have to make that choice. People who say that they just can't stop annoy me. It's not like anyone is making them do it. They make a choice to give in to their own mental pressures and physical 'need' of a substance and continue the cycle. They don't see it as an 'excuse to do what they want', because a lot of them don't want to do it anymore.... but they don't want anything else either. It's a sad, sad thing.

I think that it is an excuse for people who are weak and do not want to take responsibility for their actions or life. They CHOOSE to do drug, they CHOOSE to make it a habit, they CHOOSE to become occupied with the drug.
Hence, the definition of addiction~
The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something.
I believe it was classified as a disease so that people could make insurance claims to help them break their habit!

It's a symptom of a mental illness. People turn to alcohol because they can't deal with life. Any psychological issue that causes a significant negative impact on your life is a form of mental illness.
Some people like to call it a disease because it takes away the stigma and supoosedly makes people more likely to seek help. I think its just an excuse so the alcoholic doesn't have to take personal responsibility for their behavior.

The US government has classified alcoholism as a diease. If this addiction is truly a disease, then addiction to any drug should be classified a disease also. I imagine they do not because it would cost billions to fund each state program to fight those addictions to the degree they do alcoholism.

I believe its a disease and most people who get hooked also suffer from some kind of mental disorder such as depression, bipolar, anxiety, panic attacks, fears, etc. My son self medicated to try to cure his depression pain. He is an addict and is presently clean. If any one person does it for recreation they are just fooling you and themselves.
