China has the largest army in the world, heard it can mobilize up to 100 000 000 people if need be but definitely lacks to equipment that many western countries have, even lacks the equipment Russia has.If we are talking about technology, then we have something different, as USA has by far the most advanced equipment and training for its soldiers.

Although I know China is rapidly developing its army, increasing its budget for it and trying to get rid of old technology, will be some time until can equal the western powers.
But I have no doubt that, if China will attack USA, the outcome will be hard to guess, as even with advanced weapons and technology, will be hard to repel, let's say, 50 000 000 people that are not coming to visit the Grand Canyon.

China I would say.

If I was running a country I'd want them as my allies in any war.

Once Scotland finally gets independence give us 10 yrs to build our own military and then we will be the most powerful.

This isn't really a military question, for the simple reason that power is not simply just military strength alone. Joseph Nye has said much on the difference between "soft" power (cultural and social influence) versus "hard" power (military and economic might), and that bears reminding here. You may also want to read Paul Kennedy's "Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" as a starting point if you really want to ponder the question.

That having been said, the best answer for your question is the United States, hands down.

No other nation-state has the geographical landmass, natural resources, technological infrastructure, financial clout, population levels, and system of governance working in conjunction anywhere near as well. China doesn't have the arable land or the infrastructure to adequately support its population (never mind high corruption levels, failure to respect its vast ethnic minorities, hidebound governance). China's traditional strengths lie in its diaspora throughout the world, their financial acumen, and its near-limitless willingness to throw people instead of common sense at problems (i.e. flood control, unrest in the countryside). The Chinese, particularly, have throughout their history been very callous with their people, (especially in the various armies from throughout their history), considering human life expendable, and an acceptable substitute for lack of other resources (such as competent commanders or technology).

The Russian Federation doesn't have the population pressure problems, but the culture of corruption and disregard for the value of human life (trafficking of women, murder of dissident journalists, abusive use of the military) bring low an otherwise great nation. The European Union isn't a nation per se, but were it one, its inability to overcome certain parochial antagonisms (French vs German, Western Europe vs Eastern Europe) and engage in structural reform (common currency is as far as it gets) divert the energies of its populace into meaningless bureaucratic squabbles.

This isn't to say the gravy train is going to last forever for the United States; increasing corruption and bureaucratic ineptitude, increasing inability to integrate new immigrants or fund the education and welfare of current citizens, strategic overreach of its military, inability to balance the federal budget, inability to efficiently govern the use of land) are likely going to bring down the house eventually. Then again, the Roman Republic didn't last that long either, before it succumbed to becoming an Empire and then a failed state. However, don't look for things to come down on top of anyone's head in America anytime soon.

china definately has greater numbers, but they are more of a conventional warfighting force(more like head to head), whereas places like the US have somewhat conventional, but also a lot of guerilla fighting forces...these are the warriors that fight in the shadows...the ones you never see coming....I'm talking about special forces...such as US Navy SEALs, French Foreign Legion, Brithish SAS,...etc. About who is stronger....I think that the US could be the strongest, but we are definately not the smartest....I agree with one of the previous posts about switzerland and how they don't want to fight to solve problems, but in this day and age, I don't know how much good that's going to do you...

Hope this helped...

china....yes and no, here's why.
in terms of sheer number, china has ALOT of troops, i remember hearing something about over 2 million soldiers alone. The US army has about 600,000+.
Now the problem with the chinese army is that there is (probably not as bad as it used to be because of their economic boom, thanks to clinton and carter making sure that we rely on them for cheaply made, crappy goods, but i digress) the problem with the chinese army is that if used in full swing, it would cost so much money to just support their troops, never mind food, supplies, ammunition, etc they could only last in full swing for about 6 months give or take before their economy takes a significant hit and they might have to withdraw or greatly decrease their amount of troops due to attrition.

china has the largest army but the dont have the equipment. with the size of their ground force, in a war we would have to try to enlist the help of russia to hav any chance.
