Hi, I'm an Audiologist
Many things can cause dizziness, and the word "dizziness" is used to describe different sensations.
Our body uses the eyes, the inner ear, and feedback from our musculoskeletal system to determine if we are moving or still, upright or at an angle, etc. Therefore, balance problems can result from problems in any of these areas, and sometimes are a side-effect of medications or combinations of meds. As such they can be challenging to diagnose. A detailed case history is often the key to pin-pointing which areas to focus on first.
At 80, they probably are checking for signs of a stroke and cardiovascular issues. Other neurological conditions can cause dizziness and balance problems. They may do some inner ear tests while she is in the hospital, or may recommend that they be done after she is discharged, especially if she is experiencing true vertigo, which is a spinning sensation. They may also recommend that she have physical therapy for evaluation and treatment to help reduce the risk of falls.

I needed my glasses changed its funny how eyestrain can affect you, but my mother suffered from Menieres disease, and had dizziness.
I needed a midpoint correction for working at a computer, once I got it, my dizziness went away.
Low blood pressure can also do it as can forgetting to eat, and that can be surprisingly common in the elderly.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are easily found in hospital. A low grade ear infection can also leave the room spinning around you.
If all else fails see a chiropractor, it could be in the neck and once that's eased, she could feel better.
