over years have run the gamut. presently taking lamictal and i think it is superior regarding side effects. but that gets into the arguable morass of bipolar disorder and all that mess formally called manic depression. i do know that prozac and such would work then it would overshoot the mark sometimes and i would be unaware how irritable and ready to slap the hell out of somebody. come off was uncomfortable. sleep problems were bad. then depression would slowly return. sleepless and depressed. that feeling of everything seemed so meaningless except a drink. so then i would drink for awhile. up an down, up and down for most of adult life. anything useful?

I took Prozac for years. At first it was great, then after time, it petered out. I just stopped taking it three months ago, and the withdrawal has been nothing less than pure hell! I would not recommend Prozac, nor any other antidepressant in this class (SSRI's). My advice to you would be to discuss this with your doctor and ask about taking a non-SSRI antidepressant. At three weeks, you shouldn't experience too much in the way of withdrawal, but your doctor may still want you to taper.

I am not on any SSRIs. However I know people who are on Prozac. Get a second opinion from another Doctor if you are concerned about a medication.

Not Prozac, but yes
Being on these kinds of drugs DOES NOT make you crazy. Some people can be so rude and ignorant.

I'm not currently taking it, but I was on it for about a year and half. I really wasn't a big fan - it caused some sexual side effects and made me gain a bunch of weight. Paxil wasn't much better.

No, but a lot of people are on Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Paxil, Cymbalta, etc.

I take Cymbalta. It is a new generation of medication that acts on norepinephrine not serotonin.

I had taken just about every SSRI there was except Prozac before I learned that drugs don't cure anything. That's when I learned to properly apply cognitive therapy. That's what finally cured my depression... not doctors, not medicine, not hospitalization, and not group therapy.
