there is no age that is too young to be effected by depression. There may not be any circumstances in the childs life that would be a likely souce for the depression, it is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and can also be caused by thyroid problems, the best thing to do is get the child evaluated by a doctor and then they will help you go from there. Good luck

I have seen and treated 3 year old children with clinical depression but it almost always is a component of either a serious medical condition (hypothyroidism, for example) or of serious physical or sexual abuse or of abandonment. Depression in children is a lot more common than was once thought because they don't usually act "depressed" as adults act-out depression. Most often they have many tantrums, act angry and are irritable rather than acting sad. There are instances of children as young as 3 killing themselves as well.
When my (adopted) son was a baby, he seemed very sad, and not only did my husband and I notice it, his pediatrician did as well. He was abandoned at the hospital by his birth parents and severely neglected and possibly abused in the foster home in which he spent the first 7 months of his life.

There is no age. If a person is a youngster then the parent should get them help but if a person is age 18 they can seek help at the nearest mental health clinic.
