There are many things that can cause a 'red eye'

1. Viral Conjunctivitis - is caused by a virus and the common symptoms are painful, itchy, red eye with a watery discharge - this commonly affects BOTH eyes and you may have cold symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, and cough). You may need antibiotics to prevent a bacterial infection on top of it.

2. Bacterial conjunctivitis- a painful red eye that is usually one eye only. It may feel like sand is in your eye or light sensitivity. Also you could have a yellow pus-like discharge or 'crusty' eye. You will need to get antibiotics for this type of infection.

3. Allergic conjunctivitis - very itchy eye that is watery. Eyes are going to be super red and your eye lids may be swollen too.

4. Corneal abrasion - this is going to be extremely painful, sensitivity to light, and feeling like something is in your eye. This is going to need antibiotics and a special test to diagnosis it called 'Fluorescein staining.'

When dealing with the red eye - it is best to go see your doctor. They can easily tell you what it is check your vision to make sure that it is not affected by the infection and give you appropriate drug therapy.

Hope that helps.
